Hacienda La Esmeralda has been operated by the Peterson family since 1967 in the Boquete region of southwestern Panama.
All coffee grown at La Esmeralda is cultivated at high altitudes between 1,100 and 1,900 meters above sea level. The farm is surrounded by several mountains—including Cañas Verdes, Jaramillo, Quiel, and Palmira—which create ideal conditions for producing high-quality Panamanian coffee.
La Esmeralda’s specialty Geisha comes from the Jaramillo, Cañas Verdes, and El Velo farms, grown at elevations between 1,600 and 1,800 meters. These coffees consistently score above 91 points. While cultivating and harvesting coffee at the high altitudes of the Boquete mountains presents challenges, it allows the beans to develop a delicate floral aroma and bright citrus flavors.
One of La Esmeralda’s special Geishas, Vista 4 ANB, is a unique micro-lot coffee grown in the Buena Vista section of the El Velo farm. The cherries were harvested fully ripe, then fermented anaerobically for 120 hours, and finally dried slowly on drying beds for 44 days.
